One of the top affiliate marketers once wrote, "Selling is easy. All you have to do is figure out what people are buying and then sell it to them."
While this might seem very simplistic it's true. If you can figure out what people are interested in buying and can sell it to them, you will make money. Of course, the trick is to determine what it is that people are either buying or would like to buy.
Amazon bestsellers
One way to answer this question is by going to Amazon.com. Next, choose a category and then look for and click Best Sellers. This list is invaluable because it gives you a quick snapshot of what people are now buying in each of Amazon's many categories. For example, if you were to click on Best Sellers in the category Computers, you would find (as of this writing) that the top three products are all versions of the Kindle Fire - no surprise there since this is Amazon - but that the number four bestseller is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7-Inch, Wi-Fi)- meaning this could be a good product to sell because many people are buying it.
Magazine subscriptions
Amazon's category of Magazine Subscriptions is also a good place to find ideas for products to sell. Here again you should start by clicking on Best Sellers to see which magazines are valuable enough that people are paying to subscribe to them. When I searched on Best Sellers in this category, number one was Family Handyman. While knowing this alone will not point you towards any specific products to sell online, you could go to your nearest supermarket or newsstand and buy a copy and then browse it for product ideas.
Let Google tell you
No one knows more about what people are looking for than Google and is happy to tell you what these are. All you need to do is go to its external keyword tool and type in any keyword that interests you. For example, if you were to type in "digital cameras," you would find that 4,090,000 people searched last month on the name Nikon. You will also learn that people are very interested in Canon cameras, Canon Powershots and Nikon Coolpix cameras.
Use common sense
if your goal is to sell physical products, one of your best tools can be common sense. Just think what people like you need. Put yourself in other people's shoes. When you walk past stores, see what are being displayed in their front windows. Then look for merchants who have both these products and affiliate programs.
If you know what you want to promote
if you've already decided which product or products you want to promote, you can find affiliate programs by searching Google on the term plus the word affiliate. As an example of this if you have decided that you would like to sell women's shoes, you could search Google on women' shoes+ affiliate. If you were to do this, you would find that you could become an affiliate of heels.com, shoes. com, infinityshoes.com and many others.
If you want to sell digital products
Many affiliate marketers choose to sell digital products rather than physical products. If this interests you, you should go to ClickBank.com where you'll find hundreds of digital products that you can promote. To narrow the list down, choose a category such as e-business - e-marketing and then have results sorted by Gravity, which is a way of learning the number of distinct affiliates who earned a commission by promoting the vendor's products during the past 12 weeks - or which products that affiliates were actually able to sell.
